DAY 12 (09-09-2011) WITH ALEXANDRA

today was the exhibition for Workshop 3. I set up the works yesterday as a curation for my three workshops during Orientation course. I also met with Alexandra to talk about the feedback of Workshop2 writing and Worshop3 proposal.

First of all, let’s review the exhibition of today.

This was a final review of my whole process of the three workshops I undertook during the Orientation of MA course.

Workshop 3: My virtual museum (work on progress)

Sunday Xu : Orientation to MA

Curate yourself amongst the artists and the theorists that you are inspired from, in a form of a virtual museum. (Outcome: visual outcome+academic writing)

Workshop 3 required to design a virtual museum, where I would place my works in connection to other creative professionals / theorists’ work that I find pertinent. This would facilitate me not only to talk about my MA proposal but also research my references and connect them to my interests.

My project is about cultural identity (collective and personal); for the practical outcome of that project I used the brain as a metaphor for my thinking. The brain as an object is my “thought container” symbolizing my self-reflection while moving from the Eastern to the Western world and merging the two cultures while shifting my identity.

Workshop 3: My virtual museum/ practical outcome (work on progress)

Sunday Xu : Orientation to MA

The brain as an object in itself is separated into left and right part. I have placed quotes and theoretical text on the left (literary) part of the brain while I placed my visual references on the right (visual) part.

Workshop 1: My journey: Expectations- endings and beginings

Sunday Xu : Orientation to MA

(Outcome: visual )

This workshop required to narrate, in a visual way, my life journey placing emphasis on the personal links that pushed me to pursue an MA.
Observing different graphic symbols in China and the UK, I finally used the London ‘tube map’ and the Chinese ‘palm map’ as graphic ways that represent different types of journeys. My project is not just a graphical comparison, but I also use these two maps as a cultural reference, to comment on the different perspetives that the 2 different cultures (English- Chinese) have towards life. The tube map symbolizes the busy urban life of London, where physical travelling holds an important role, and the hand ‘map’ symbolizes the rather more spiritual Chinese culture focusing more on destiny and soul- body journey. By connecting these two maps I not only visualize my journey from China but also my MA research interest on how collective identity is influenced by the exchange of population between China and the UK.

Here are some of the corrcitions of Workshop 2 and Workshop 3.
